Safe Routes to School Round 2:
The Rhode Island Statewide Planning Program, Rhode Island Department of Transportation, and Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Steering Committee announce Round 2 of the RI Safe Routes to School Program. In an effort to encourage and enable more of Rhode Island’s children to safely walk and bike to school, application packets are available for the 100% federally funded program. The funding is for infrastructure improvements near the schools as well as for educational, encouragement, and law enforcement activities to help make it safer to walk and bike to school. Elementary and middle schools are eligible for this funding. For background information on the program go to the National Center SRTS website at: http://www.saferoutesinfo.org Application packets have been mailed to the municipal chief elected officials, planning directors, public works directors and school superintendents. Electronic copies are being sent to relevant listserves. Additional information and the 2009 application packet is posted on the RI website at: http://www.planning.ri.gov/transportation/srts/srts.htm. Applications are due by 3:00 p.m., February 24, 2010. For more information or to have a printed or electronic Application Packet sent to you, contact Ronnie Sirota, the RI SRTS Coordinator at 222-1233 or at rsirota@doa.ri.gov.
An informational workshop is set for December 16 at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. (contents the same) at the RI Dept. of Administration, One Capitol Hill, Providence in Conference Room A.
