Providence, R.I. * The Rhode Island Department of Health (HEALTH)
staff is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Joseph DiMase,
founder of the Screening Colonoscopies for Uninsured People (SCUP)
program.

“Dr. DiMase worked tirelessly to ensure that any uninsured individual
who needed a colonoscopy had access to one,” said Michael Fine, M.D.,
director of HEALTH. “He was a dedicated partner and collaborator with
HEALTH in working to increase
the number of screenings done in Rhode Island and was the state’s
leading advocate for eliminating colorectal cancer.”

Dr. DiMase was an active member of the Partnership to Reduce Cancer in
Rhode Island and a member of the Screening and Detection Working Group,
which looks at common causes of cancer and increasing access to
screenings. He founded the SCUP program to provide colorectal screenings
to Rhode Islanders between the ages of 50 and 64 who have limited access
to healthcare.
