Medical Papers

The quality of health care depends in part on the accuracy of information published in medical journals. The peer-review process is designed to maintain scientifically credible information and research standards. Papers are critiqued and approved by at least two experts (usually researchers or physicians) prior to being accepted for publication.

Pamela Miles was the lead reviewer for the NCCAM Reiki Backgrounder for the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). NCCAM is the center at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that studies the safety and efficacy of complementary therapies such as Reiki. There is no copyright protection on this document and the government encourages you to use it freely to enhance your health care.

The Reiki module written by Pamela Miles for the University of Minnesota’s Center for Spirituality and Healing, is peer-reviewed and written for the health consumer and for care providers.

Shiflet S, Nayak S, Bid C, Miles P, Agostinelli S. Effect of Reiki Treatments on Functional Recovery in Patients in Poststroke Rehabilitation: A Pilot Study. Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. 2002;8(6):755-763. I was the sole Reiki master on this NIH-funded research project, and as such was involved in the study’s design, training, implementation and interpretation of results.

nap Respected Neighbor Pawtucket, RI 3152 Posts	Hospice Care to reduce stress in end of life care Dr. Joan Teno, HHCRI Associate Medical Director and Brown University Professor, is the author of the lead article for the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) this month. The article, Change in End-of-Life Care for Medicare Beneficiaries: Site of Death, Place of Care, and Health Care Transitions in 2000, 2005, and 2009, is attached. The article discusses the trends in healthcare related to where patients die and the stress a patient has when being transferred from one healthcare setting to another. Palliative Care 2020: Transforming the Care of Serious Illness in the Home Both palliative medicine and geriatrics focus on the human being and their experience of health and illness across many years and settings of care. Both fields have developed an evidence base that demonstrates improved value, better quality and, as an epiphenomenon of better quality, lower cost. The challenge facing our work is one of going to scale. How can we assure access to these proven models to all persons in need? We will accomplish this far more effectively by working together rather than separately. Diane E. Meier, MD, FACP is Director of the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC), at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai, a national organization devoted to increasing the number and quality of palliative care programs in the United States. She is also Vicechair for Public Policy and Professor of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine; and Gaisman Professor of Medical Ethics at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. In 2012, she was awarded the American Cancer Society’s Medal of Honor for Cancer Control in recognition of her pioneering leadership of the effort to bring non-hospice palliative care into mainstream medicine.
