Keeping Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders Safe

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience a seven times higher rate of poisoning and self-inflicted injury. In addition, these children have three times the rate of bone fractures compared to children without ASD. Nearly 50% of children with ASD engage in elopement or wandering behavior. Based on these statistics, physical safety is an enormous concern and stress for families that have children with ASD.

 

Would you like to be able to provide clear and specific safety guidelines and resources to the families of patients with ASD? This program will review advice on improving home-safety, water-safety, motor vehicle-safety and strategies for dealing with elopement. In exploring the kinds of children most at risk for these accidents, participants will gain a better understanding of the reasons for the behaviors and strategies for prevention. The program also will examine the most frequent types of unsafe behavior and provide resources available to help families keep their children safe.

 

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand injury risks for children and ASD;
  • Identify commons types of risks/injuries;
  • Counsel parents/caregivers on preventive home safety measures;
  • Explain the impact of stress related to risks/injuries on parents/caregivers; and
  • Offer helpful resources to parents/caregivers.

OVERVIEW

The US Bureau of the Census estimates that by the year 2050 nearly 50% of the United States' population will be a race other than white and 24.4% (US Census Bureau, 2008) of the population will consider themselves Hispanic (regardless of race). Further, the number of individuals over the age of 5 speaking a language other than English in their home has more than doubled in the past 30 years and at a pace four times greater than the US population growth. This data underscores the need to address the reality that racial and ethnic minority children in the United States experience multiple disparities in medical and oral health, access to care, and use of/access to services. Columbia University Medical Center: Culturally Responsive Health Education/Training
The Columbia University Medical Center, a community-based, hospital-affiliated, primary care practice in northern Manhattan, partnered with a large social service agency and a home-visiting program to develop culturally responsive health-education materials regarding medication administration, using the basic tenets of health literacy.
