Progress Made on Anti-SLAPP Legislation

First Step in Series

Today, 30 January 2001, a delegation from CONO, NECSNA, legal counsel, and others from the City went to Denver to testify in behalf of HB 1150. This is a significant event in that Colorado does not have any strong protection for its citizens or associations to prevent a developer, private entity, etc., from bringing suit against anyone who may comment on, object to, or otherwise make any presentation to deny, or in any way modify a proposal brought before a governmental entity.

The proposed bill was passed out of committee and is expected to be on the floor of the State House in the next week or so, with comments before the State Senate expected in 3-4 weeks.

If passed into Colorado law, this will serve to discourage such suits and remove the fear of legal reprisal from people who want to say something to government and agencies.
