Thanks Doug! I appreciate hearing more about this and your willingness to keep us up-to-date. Hopefully, before it comes up again, I will get the time to better inform myself so I can voice my concerns/approval of the matter.

I check this website from time to time just to see if the conservation zoning thing has reared its ugly head again... This would be the third time now that I know of.

First of all, in defense of the neighborhood association, there are some great members who have done a lot for Sylvan Park. (eg. the Pickney's) It is in part because of their work that many are getting $200,000.00 for houses that cost $60,000 less than 10 years ago.

That being said, I would like to say that due to the conservation zoning issue, I am no longer a member of the association and don't plan on re-joining (not speaking for my wife here).

At the last meeting I attended, (3-4 years ago) I too had a run-in with Mr. Summers and found him as arrogant and condensending as you have described. It seems only those with money and the ability to pay others to do their work for them in this neighborhood have the right to choose how our property is zoned. (Yes I realize there are some poor folks out there who support this too but this is my response - write your own) I have given 6 loooong years of nights, weekends, blood, sweat, and tears to this old house and I think my opinion counts.

Sylvan Park is Historic, yes. But historically significant, - no. What makes this neighborhood significant is the freedom to be creative, and yes - take a little artistic license in the process. If you take a look at the differing home styles in S.P., you will see that it has always been that way. That's why every house doesn't have ginger-bread, and every house isn't craftsman style. Diversity is something to be cherished. NO, don't get the wrong idea - I'm married with children.

WE should be able to individualize our properties to our own tastes (and needs), not to some neighborhood association's. Yes, I HATE fake siding, vinyl fencing, cheap yard art and re-muddleing jobs... But what is at stake here is our rights to our own property. If I had wanted a neighborhood review team, I would have bought in Brentwood... Sniff sniff.

I have spoken with those on my block and the response is overwhelmingly negative on this issue. If you are ready to start a petition drive, count me in.
