  • Respect-O-Meter: Valued Neighbor
Let me introduce myself. I am your block captain captain. I was part of the original crew who put the block cpt. system in place. At that time the neighborhood was a much smaller place and getting volunteers was not hard. Now with over 500 homes and some streets with over 30 homes it's a bit tougher. I am constantly on the lookout for new block cpts. to help make areas smaller and easier to handle. Especially important come luminary and annual meeting time. I try very hard to have the block cpt actually live on their street, something that has not always been possible. When a block cpt resigns it is usually due to their moving or their schedule has just gotten too much. The block cpt. usually recommends some names to me as they know their street and who might be willing to take on the responsibility.
I may also know someone who has said they would be willing should the position become available. I report on the block cpts. during our monthly meeting. I may or may not say the name of the block cpt retiring-only that someone is and if I have the position filled as of yet.(that may be why some names and not others have made it into the minutes). When I receive notice that the person is retiring I call or e-mail them with my thanks for their service. If a block wishes to vote on their new block cpt and the person is willing, I'm happy to welcome them to the crew. The only thing I expect is for the newsletters to go out on time (if on vacation they know to contact me and I will deliver them for them, help delivering emergency information to the homeowners (the fire letters, handle the luminaries and an effort made to gather proxies and answer questions of those homeowners, who for reasons of their own, choose not to go to the annual meeting. Without the proxies I seriously doubt we would ever hold another offical meeting. Never has a block cpt been told who or what to vote for. That is to be discussed between the homeowner and their block cpt.
All in all I truly believe the block cpt. system to be a truly effective one and all my volunteers are greatly appreciated. If anyone wishes to volunteer, I am always looking for future captains.
