Dear BigAllan,

I never considered the possibility of the children being killed by a fire or a home accident.  Many awful things can occur when the parents leave the house, even for a few minutes, today.

Does anyone know at what age a Rhode Island child can stay alone in a home?

Dear BigAllan,

On the other hand, I grew up in a neighborhood in the early 1960's where the parents would leave their children alone at home, play cards at a neighbor's home, and leave the doors and windows unlocked.

I wonder if I asked my old neighbors in 2009 if they would repeat that behavior from 45 plus years ago.

I imagine windows were opened and listened to and not forgotten kids, but teens perhaps to be left alone but with a number to call and be called to be checked on
