Southfield is most livable suburb, survey says

A large business center, a mix of retail and restaurants and affordable housing are just three of the reasons why the City of Southfield was named the Most Livable Suburb in metro Detroit by Forbes magazine.

The article was posted on the magazine's Web site, Forbes.com, on Oct. 11. Southfield was chosen based on factors such as quality of schools, the size and prices of houses, neighborhood safety and the level of education of the residents.

"This is good news for us and it comes as a surprise because we didn't know Forbes magazine was doing this," said Nimrod Rosenthal, director of Southfield Community Relations. "I don't think this will come as a surprise to Southfield residents who always knew what a wonderful place the city is to live."

Forbes Magazine used a model from NeighborhoodScout.com, a statistical Web site that gathers census figures, as well as information from the FBI, U.S. Justice Department, the National Center for Educational Statistics and other sources to make determinations about every neighborhood in America.

Southfield, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2008, has a strong residential community and is home to both local and national businesses.

"This designation definitely affirms that Southfield offers a quality of life that you can't find everywhere," said Rosenthal, who has lived in Southfield for 20 years.

The top three cities that met the most criteria in five categories were listed and ranked as first, second and third.

"Some of those criteria included affordability, quality of education and safety," said Rosenthal. "In Southfield you can definitely get more house and land for your money. A lot of residents work and live in Southfield so there is a closeness to work. These are elements that make Southfield special."

Southfield's close neighbor was ranked as the second Most Livable Suburb in the metro area. That was Lathrup Village, which shares some services with the City of Southfield. The City of Troy was ranked third.

"We believe Lathrup Village is a very unique community," said Jeffrey Mueller, city administrator for Lathrup Village. "Although there is no distinguished business district in Lathrup Village, it is a neat, neat place to live and it is truly a community."

Just minutes from Southfield's city center, Lathrup Village has a small-town feel and hosts events that encourage community involvement.

"Every month we have a supper club where residents come out to the community center," Mueller said. "Residents don't have to participate, but we have large crowds. Lathrup Village is a best-kept secret."
