TROLLEY UPDATE (2-02)

TROLLEY UPDATE
from the newsletter of the Pikes Peak Historical Street Railway Foundation

The Foundation was contacted in late 2000 by a potential benefactor with commitments to be fulfilled in 2001; one of these, for $190,000 was earmarked to complete the engineering and design work on the West Colorado line. This benefactor backed out of all commitments in mid-summer without donating any funds. As a result, this engineering work has been aborted. In addition, meetings with CDOT indicated major concerns regarding an active trolley line on Colorado Avenue during the planned demolition and reconstruction of the I-25 overpass. The rebuild is not expected to be completed for five years and precludes the Foundation from operating on West Colorado for an extended period of time.

Recently, several developers of SoDo, the area immediately south of the downtown business district, indicated interest in a vintage trolley line near downtown. A new circulator route is now envisioned to serve this area. It will be close to the proposed convention center and the eastern entrance to Confluence Park.

The new Lowell Line has generated support and received some funding from the Lowell Neighborhood. For more information and updates, see the website at: http://colospringstrolleys.home.att.net
