National Night Out Report

The National Night Out was held on Aug. 5th at the Oakcliff Church of the Nazarene. It was in the
hottest week Oklahoma City has seen so far all summer. Since it was so hot, we decided to take our
eating indoors to the Church air-conditioning. Jerry Breaux (with New Dominion Oil) & a friend
of his, Walter showed up to cook. THANKS guys for a great job of fixing the hot dogs on the grill
in the heat! We had approximately 50 brave souls show up to brave the 100+ heat. We had hot dogs,
chips, & cookies. For the door prizes this year, we had cash drawings! Cash is always a good thing
and we had so few present at NNO, it went over very well. Those present had a good time with City
Councilman, Pete White, State Representative, Richard Morrissette, Sergeant Hale (OKC Police
Department), & the Firemen from the station that serves Oakcliff at 29th & Eastern. This year we
had the Student Council Rep for Ward 4 also, young Mr. Sanders. Target Representative, David
Puente came and presented ONA with a Certificate of Appreciation for having NNO & a $25.00
gift certificate. The people from KidTrax were present to make all the children ID cards. Debbie
Eddy, from the Visiting Nurse?’s Association was present with no cost Blood Pressure check ups for
all. A very special THANKS to Juanita & Mike Phelps, John Cole, Bobbie Allen, & Pastor
Mike Meeks for the work they put in the on that day. All thanks to those who came out in the heat
to enjoy their neighbors! Next year, the Neighborhood Alliance has said.NNO will be held in
September or October nationwide to avoid the possible heat in August around the county. Please
watch for information about the 2009 National Night Out in our newsletter and the Oklahoman.

Neighborhood In Action

All Summer and Fall, the Oakcliff Church of the Nazarene will be helping neighbors in need. At 6:00PM, every Sunday, they will instruct and set up help in the Oakcliff neighborhood - Helping the Elderly, Shut-in, Single Moms with various tasks ( Mowing, Tree Trimming, Other). ONA will suggest persons who qualify as recipients. We thank them for the service they will be doing for our neighborhood. Come to the meetings or go to the church on Sunday if you are in need of this help.

The Oakcliff Church of the Nazarene is also starting the children's Wednesday Night Caravan Program. This is a Christian Scouting program that teaches lots of different things. It is for ages
3 through the 5th grade. The program starts at the same time as Wednesday night services do (7:00 PM) beginning Wednesday August 27th but you can join after that date. Oakcliff Community ------- Big Block Party!!!!!!!!

When: September 20, 2008
Where: Brookdale Drive will be blocked as it runs off Parker
Why: For a Fun filled time!

Most people will agree that there are advantages to knowing your neighbors. For example, what if you're baking a recipe and run short on sugar? Where will you turn to borrow a cup? Kidding aside, it's beneficial for the safety of our homes and children that neighbors look out for one another. It's helpful if neighbors can spot a stranger on the street, and especially if one is lurking near your home. Children need to know where they can turn in an emergency and the difference between a friendly neighbor and a stranger. A concerned community helps to create a sense of well being and safety for all.

That's why we are giving a block party. Block parties provide the opportunity for old neighbors to socialize, new neighbors to make new friends and just have a good time! Even if you don't become best friends, it becomes a little easier to identify a neighbor or know if someone lives in your neighborhood.

This block party has been planned to give the community a chance to get outdoors with your neighbors, enjoy some good food, fellowship, activities and entertainment. You may learn we have some talented neighbors that are very entertaining. Come have fun and learn how making friends helps make a better place to live. We hope to have leaders from the community and local police to meet and great.
