Way Too Fast - Way Too Slow

Posted in: Oakleaf Hammock

We have a great neighborhood and fantastic neighbors.  But one annoyance

The neighborhood association has used their own judgment to lower the speed limit to 15 MPH throughout the neighborhood.  I would be the first to agree that too many people speed through the area, but my experience has been that they are generally contractors (hey John, some help here) or service people.  Most residents are respectful of reasonable speed limits.

But as my wife points out, 15 mph is lower than even a school zone.  It is nothing less than unreasonable.  When I wrote to Melrose they we delighted to inform me that there is no active Homeowners' Association - there is only Melrose, who are free to impose any rule that they agree to without any community discussion.

To those in the neighborhood that feel that it is safe and a good practice to have their young kids play in the streets, your annoying slow down signs are actually contributing to the possibility of injury - the signs belong in your yard, not blocking public roadways.  Try the playground instead of the primary passage ways

I could not have said it better myself.

First off let me say, this is a great neighborhood .

As far as speed limits go, 25mph was slow enough. The problem was that people were not following it. The solution is not to lower it to 15mph. That wont solve a thing,  whats next 5mph when people dont do the 15mph ?

As far as those with street signs, again I fully agree. Kids should not be playing in the streets, homeowners do not own the road in front of their house. Its there for cars to traverse.

That is why you have a yard and now a playground. For safety sake please keep your kids off the road.

Great neighborhood indeed! :-) I am amazed that a decrease in our neighborhood's speed limit to "help" create a safer community would be an annoyance to anyone. The "neighorhood association" used their own judgement and lowered the speed limit as a result of many concern neighbors who support a safe neighborhood for the children. My children do not play in the street, however they do play in the front yard on occassions and 25 mph in my opinion, is too fast. Children ride bikes, children rollerblade, children ride scooters, they would need their neighorhood streets to be able to do this. Perhaps you did not read the article about the tragic accident in the Covered Bridge community a year ago. Maybe you'd be interested? http://www.abcactionnews.com/news/local/story/Manatee-child-killed-in-a-Palmetto-neighborhood/kMlbH0SGxEW-70vLbf4K-A.cspx If lowering a community's speed limit and the use of slow down signs help prevent the death or injury of one of the neighborhood children...or reminds a driver there are child playing ahead, I'd say it's well worth the annoyance and inconvenience.
