The City of Long Beach, The Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews, and California Families In Focus are pleased to announce the Long Beach 20th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace and Unity Parade Celebration.

Saturday morning, 10:30 AM, January 19th, the parade will start on Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, intersecting Anaheim Street. It will proceed North on Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, turn right (East) on 19th Street, and turn left (North) on Lemon Avenue. Parade Parking is available at Long Beach City College, located at Orange Avenue and Pacific Coast Hwy. From the hours of 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM, at this same location, shuttle buses will be transporting participates and spectators to and from the parade route.

This years Parade Grand Marshals include a tribute to the Honorary Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald and community activist Mr. Ernest Samuel McBride Sr. This year?’s youth Honorary Grand Marshal is Disney?’s own Mickey Mouse. Expect to see a spectacular presentation of Dr. King throughout this festive parade.

The parade is followed by a multi-cultural celebration at King Park, located at 1950 Lemon Avenue. The celebration will begin at 12:30 PM and end at 5:00 PM. This year?’s celebration is filled with great entertainment and special interest groups that focus on the teachings of Dr King. So, bring your children and grand children to learn through Forgotten Images, a traveling educational exhibit and museum that features custom displays for Martin Luther King, Jr., African American History and other civic celebrations. Or enjoy ?“Dreamland?”, this years children and teen area, a production of California Families In Focus, which includes a main stage for live musical and dancing performances; such as Daniel Curtis Lee; best known as ?“Cookie?” on televisions ?“Ned?’s Declassified?”, 3 huge bouncers, arts and crafts booths, game booths, a trackless train ride, a mobile outreach trailer that includes internet and educational video games for teens, and a nutritional snack stand that teaches kids about nutrition. All rides and games are free for the children.

At the main stage celebration, the teachings of Dr. King will be continued with his honorary quotes being read throughout the program and an opening tribute to this legendary leader. The main stage headlining entertainment include Marching Thunder, Antioch Vessel of Honor Choir, Hmong Association of Long Beach, Dembrebrah West African Drum & Dance Ensemble, Renaissance High School For The Arts, Compton Brothers In Harmony, Jah Free; the newly signed artist with Warner Brothers Records, The Crush Band; an R & B cover band, who?’s three lead vocalist can be seen and heard singing backup for recording artist Teena Marie next month at the Nokia Theatre, The Delfonics Review; they are known for such songs as Didn?’t I Blow Your Mind?”, ?“Lala Means I Love You?”, and many other memorable love songs. Closing off this star studded evening, we have the legendary group Love Togetherness and Devotion, best known as L.T.D., performing their hits, Love Ballad, Holding On, (Every Time I Turn Around) Back In Love Again, Shine On and April Love.

Along with a day of enlightment through music, you can visit an assortment of new attractions such as the Health Pavilion; all free health screenings, such as blood pressure and diabetes, or enjoy a relaxing massage. If you want to get involved in the community and make a difference, visit the Nonprofit Area where you will find an array of services being provided right here in Long Beach and lots of volunteer opportunities to improve the community around you. Other attractions include an assortment of specialty craft, merchandise, food, and informational exhibitors that will feed your senses.
