Porch Theft

Posted in: Prairie Queen
Every evening, I walk my dog through the neighborhood, mainly around my block and surrounding streets. I have talked with numerous people in the last few weeks who have had things stolen from their porches and front yards. The objects that have been taken have all been heavy things that would take at least 2 people to lift and a truck to hold. And apparently this is happening day or night.
I realize that we do not have very many patrollers right now, but to those we do have, and to everyone in general, we all need to be alert to who is around. I have seen several very strange looking people that clearly do NOT live around here, walking around, looking things over. I am not at all suggesting anyone ask ''strange'' looking people what their business is here in our neighborhood, but that we all be cautions and be aware, and let people know we are all paying attention.
I have lived in this neighborhood for nearly my entire life. It has always felt like home to me, like the safest place in the world where no harm can come to me. But as I have grown up and had my own family, I realize that no place is completely safe from crime and from being a target. But awareness is the first step to putting a stop to something. We must all be aware of our surroundings, our property, our neighbors and their properties and who is coming around our streets. Walking my dog in the evenings, sometimes even after dark, has allowed me to see things I never expected to see around here -- peculiar people on foot or in cars, that look to me like they are just seeking a split-second opportunity to do something they shouldn't. It has been both enlightening and alarming to see this for myself. I pass it on to you all in the hopes you will all become even more aware of what is around us and the changing safety net of our neighborhood.
RE: PORCH THEFT

Thanks for your post! The more aware we become, the safer our streets will be. Also, I would encourage you to attend the general meetings and bring these types of issue's up. The more ideas we can generate, the faster we can come up with solutions to rid our streets of crime.
