Actually, not to split hairs but........
It depends on their dates.
The Lincoln, Wheat Ears Reverse penny weighs 3.11 grams.
The Lincoln, Memorial Reverse penny (1959 to mid 1982) weighs 3.11 grams.
The Lincoln, Memorial Reverse penny (mid 1982 to present) weighs 2.5 grams.
It's not easy to tell the 1982s apart, so to figure out how many cents weigh a pound (or any other amount) you'd have to decide which date range you wanted to use and eliminate all 1982 coins. To help, a pound is 453.6 gm so just divide that by the weight of the penny date that you decided to use.
If the Pennies are from 1983 to Present, then roughly 181 pennies equal a pound.
If the Pennies are from 1982 and earlier, the roughly 146 pennies are a pound.
There can be a couple ways to look at it. We will just consider a normal size US cent.
From 1983 to Present pennies weigh 2.5 grams
1982 and earlier (Modern & Wheat Lincolns) pennies weigh 3.11 grams
The difference is due to the a higher amount of Copper (95%) in earlier pennies. Modern pennies contain very little copper and are about 99% Zinc.
1 pound = 453.59237 grams
Math
453.59/2.5 = 181
453.59/3.1 = 146
If you use older pennies we are already around 113 lbs.!!!! If you go with newer ones then we are at about 91 lbs....so technically, the HOA will have to count them all because there is no way to wiegh them to ensure the amount is correct.
I will probably just right them a check....but good luck with that!
