Hi. Anyone have experience working with the city to get traffic slowed on their street via speed bumps, parking limitations, rerouting, etc.?

I have emailed the city dept. and received prelim. info on the process.

Traffic meeting

Want to talk with others concerned about neighborhood traffic?

Tom Badrick from Sunnyside Neighborhood Association and I have set up a meeting to talk more about this issue. It is Wednesday, March 1 at 6:00 PM at the Southeast Uplift offices: 3534 SE Main.

Residents from Richmond, Sunnyside, Hosford-Abernethy, Mt. Tabor and Buckman are all invited!

It won't be easy

I have spoken with City of PDX traffic staff and asked for help in reducing traffic speed on Harrison/Lincoln St. between SE 20 and 39th. So far, I've gotten a chilly response - "traffic calming was already tried in the mid 80's" "the City has limited resources" "there are other priorities" "report speeding problems to the police".

I suspect the City of PDX will only consider additional traffic calming measures if they are seriously lobbied by our neiborhood associations.

Unfortunatly, I won't be able to attend the April 1 meeting. I hope their will be other opportunities to meet and participate. I also hope our neighborhood association(s) will identify traffic calming as a priority. Traffic will certainly increase in our neighborhood as Belmont, Hawthorn, Division, and Powell become more congested.

Back by popular demand, Portland State University is offering the City of Portland-sponsored course for Portland neighborhood volunteers and community activists. Topics include:
?¥ Traffic management techniques--Speed bumps, traffic circles and "traffic calming"
?¥ Regional transportation planning--How do traffic decisions in other areas affect us?
?¥ Environment--the urban landscape, street design,m air quality--What quality of life do we want?
?¥ Alternative transportation modes--Pedestrians, bicycleists and transit--Can we share the road?
?¥ Transportation finance and policy--How to get your issue on the public polciy makers' agenda.

This ten-week course will meet on Tuesdays from 6:40-8:40 pm, March 28 through May 30 on the PSU campus.
