PPS Superintendent Announces New Process

Tuesday, November 26, 2002, PORTLAND, OR -In January, 2003, Portland Public

Schools (PPS) will hold a community meeting to take public input on the

proposed disposition of two buildings, the Masonic Temple and the Tubman

Annex.

Please Note: This is not part of the process to look at the district's

vacant lands (aka ''Sixty Acres''). There will be a separate process to

consider any recommendations on each of these lands.

On October 28, 2002, the PPS School Board adopted a policy charging the

superintendent to set up public input processes for any recommendations on

buildings or lands.

The first step in this process for input on Masonic Temple and Tubman Annex

is receiving input. A fact-finding report will be developed in consultation

with the school community and neighborhood organizations. Then, a community

meeting to gain additional public input will be held prior to Superintendent

Jim Scherzinger giving his recommendation to the School Board.

The Masonic Temple is located east of Jefferson High School on North

Commercial. The deteriorated building has been vacant for over a decade.

The other property is the Tubman Annex located to the south of the Tubman

Middle School on North Flint. This 2,000- square foot building has been used for offices and special classes in the past.

Location, date and time for the meeting will be forthcoming.
