Electronic Billboards

Electronic Billboards

I understand that my posting is late for the March 15th meeting, but feel that it is an on going issue until they take the billboard down. The sign on 28th and Broadway is an accident waiting to happen. Evenings and night time are the worst. The flashing board mixed with congestion; both auto and pedestrian is scary. You know what, in my attempt to keep my eyes on the road I have never been able to read who all the advertisers are.

Meetings re: E-Billboard

Just an info. update. This discussion group has been quiet, but alot has been going on. I encourage all of you who have something to say on this issue to post it here, this is the most effective way to have a voice on the subject.

Members of the executive boards of several local neighborhood associations (Sullivan's Gulch, Grant Park, Irvington, Beaumont-Wilshire, and NEBBA - NE Broadway Business Association) have formed a coalition against the electronic billboard at 28th and NE B'way. There have been 3 meetings of the coalition to date, and a meeting is scheduled tonight (3/29/99) as well.

The content of the meetings has been to develop an action plan to get the sign removed. So far here are some of the things in process:

1) Planning a protest rally at the sign in the very near future (watch this list for the date and time). There will also be a large Ad in the Hollywood Star about the protest.

2) Crafting a letter to be sent to the businesses who advertize on the sign. This letter will also be cc'd to the property owner's, and the company that owns the sign itself, as well as the city council. As a part of this effort, a list of the advertizers is being generated, with the immediate goal of having individuals boycott those businesses that advertize on the sign.

3) Soliciting support for the coalition from as many other NE Portland neighborhood associations and business associations as possible. At last count, 11 additional neighborhood associations have stated their support for the goals of the coalition.

4) Crafting a press release re: the coalition's position on the sign, and actions being taken.

I wanted to provide this info. just to let you all know that this is not a dead issue.

electronic sign letters

I am looking forward to Saturday's demonstration of opposition to these signs. Thanks to those who put it together.
Has the list of sign owners, property owners, and advertisers been assembled yet?

Letters to Advertisers

Yes, there is a list of businesses who advertise on the sign. I don't have it here though. We will have the list at the demonstration, along with the letter sent out to advertisers by the "Coalition Against the Sign", as well as pre-addressed postcards to be sent to the advertisers by individual community members. We will post the list of advertisers to the web site soon.

See you at the Demonstration!
