Bad news for Blackwell
Republican Secretary of State Ken Blackwell got some bad news on Monday, and it came from a Democrat. Consultant Alan Melamed said he and an associate asked Blackwell's office for a computer disc of all registered voters in Ohio. The disc included a group of numbers, listed under the heading ?“school district,?” that looked a little familiar, he said.
It turns out that the list was one of 20 Blackwell's office gave out that mistakenly included millions of social security numbers.
?“For someone who prides himself on what a good job he does protecting voters, this suggests the contrary,?” Melamed said of Blackwell, the leading Republican candidate for governor.
Blackwell spokesman James Lee said the agency updated voter registration files, but failed to remove some of the social security numbers. Political parties, interest groups and campaigns ask for the lists regularly, Lee said.
?“These people are in the business of winning the favor of voters and not the business of identity theft,?” he said.
The office is contacting all 20. So far, everyone contacted has promised to return the disc.
Last month, Blackwell agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit by buying software to remove social security numbers from 1.2 million business documents posted on his Web site.
