Think about it
Having discussed this issue in the last district I lived in, let me offer some minor insight. Uniforms themselves do make everyone equal in appearance. For example (and I am not a fashion maven so bear with me) let?’s say a white shirt and Khaki pants are the uniform. What you end up with unless only one manufacturer and one store are authorized to sell the uniform, is that Janey gets an American Eagle outfit meeting requirements. Billy gets Wal-Mart specials. Kids know the difference and that difference is just a prevalent as the differences now. Just ask anyone whose kids attend CSG or any other private schools with uniforms. Also, as alluded to by Droopy Drawers, the WAY you wear your clothes is as distinctive as WHAT you wear.
I would have to ask what Reynoldsburg is trying to achieve with uniforms before I would pursue a discussion on the applicability to Pickerington. Is there inappropriate dress in their schools? Is there really gang dress? Because believe me, even if you strip a gang member naked you can still tell he or she is in a gang. They take drastic measures to make sure their affiliation in known way beyond their wardrobe or the attachments to the wardrobe.
I agree with Central Mom in my hopes that the board has better things to deal with but given what I keep hearing about dual standards existing in our district due to either inability or unwillingness to address it, maybe a parent focus group could be formed to investigate either uniforms or the dual standards.
