Board member Gail Oakes stated, ?“Every time this issue has been on the ballot, the community has not supported it. This time I think it?’s up to the community to say what they want and what they don?’t. It?’s foolish to not move forward. We need to get ahead of the eight ball, not be behind it. We?’re always playing catch up. This is our chance not to play catch up. We?’re doing our job. Now it?’s time for the community to step up and do its job.?”
?•Board President Lisa Reade added, ?“We are the 19th largest school district in the state of Ohio. When you fail (to pass a bond issue) four times, it?’s hard to come back with a bigger issue. But things have backed up into each other. We are against the wall.?”
Future prospects
Brink said he does not intend to return to the ballot if this request fails.
?“My plea is this; if the issue fails, and I hope it does not, we do not go back on the ballot for a bond issue next year. Instead we focus on dealing with the (expiring) operating levies. There?’s no space for modulars anymore. We?’ll be forced into split sessions in the 2008 school year. I?’d like to see us formally adopt a plan for action if this doesn?’t pass,?” said Brink.
The district has $2.7 million in operating levies that will be expiring in 2007, and $7 million that will expire in 2008.
Reade agrees.
?“This is the last time I will support an issue for buildings until we solve our operating issues. We need to be taking care of educating the over 10,000 students that go to our school district,?” said Reade.
Brink projected that, if the bond issue fails, property valuations will decline, which will end up costing taxpayers money.
?“If we don?’t get this issue passed, everybody in the community is going to be hurting, not just the kids,?” Brink said.
His is just a snippet from the article in this weekend?’s SE Messenger. Rather than paste the whole thing I just put in the part that I wish to address.
First to Mrs. Oakes. I have been a supporter since you first got on the board. With comments like this my support is waning. You recognize that we do not support the levies and then in the next sentence you state that it is time for us to say what we want. Your prior sentence should have rendered the second sentence moot. We are saying what we want ?– aren?’t you listening? You didn?’t ask us if we wanted a middle school added to the plan. Are you saying that we are very clear with you in not accepting the two elementary option but not clear on ?…. WHAT? Please clarify your statements. I want to continue to support you but I need to understand your message. Also please stop telling me when it?’s time to step up and do my job. I know what my job is and I know what I can and cannot afford. It?’s YOUR job to come up with different options for us to look at and then present to us at the polls what you have found to be the most likely to pass there.
