This is great news for the community. Now let's just hope the city and township can work together without formal agreements to get this equipment installed and operational for the safety of our families and community.
28 used sirens donated to Fairfield County
DISPATCH STATE SERVICE
LANCASTER, Ohio ?— Fairfield County will double the number of emergency sirens countywide when 20 used sirens donated by Lake County in northeastern Ohio are put into use, county Emergency Management Agency Director Matthew Keefe said yesterday.
Fairfield County currently has 19. Lake County donated 28 more, of which 20 will be put to use now and the rest saved for spare parts, Keefe said.
The county commissioners announced yesterday that the county will pay $80,000 of the estimated $145,000 cost to erect and activate the additional sirens in communities and rural townships dotting the county; local governments will pick up the rest.
Wiring, batteries, telephone poles and other equipment account for the cost to activate the sirens. Emergency sirens are commonly used to warn people of tornadoes and other weather emergencies, and they may be used for hazardous-material spills and other menaces.
The high-growth area of Pickerington and Violet Township will likely get as many as six of the additional sirens, with communities and townships in the rest of the county getting one each, Keefe said.
