I know that the Democrats had a huge victory last night. I know there must be dancing in the streets of the liberal urban areas of the State.
Before you all get carried away with the celebration you should first realize that the new Democratic governor promised to fix education and get good jobs into the state. Taking a page out of the Republican hand book the Democrats put on the ballot the minimum wage issue (which also passed) and they drew their base into the polls. Will these new and higher wages just cause more of them to be laid off?
With a combination of scandals and RINOs running for office many local Republicans crossed over to vote for the Democrats at the state wide offices. Many times we may want to think that there is a revolution going on and everyone tries to find reasons to believe that the state just turned BLUE.
I think that the Democrats, especially in the South, did elect some conservative democrats to congress. One thing lacking in the democratic party was the conservatives especially fiscal conservatives instead of the John Kerry's of the world.
I believe here in Ohio the reverse of that happened with Mr. Blackwell. He catered to the religious right and forgot about the middle and the moderates. Many in the Blackwell base wanted to make abortion the lead issue and that turned many voters away from Blackwell. I quite frankly (a life lone Republican) was very concerned at the possibility of a Rod Parsley having the ear of the governor. The state house scandals drove me and others away from voting for the state wide Republican candidates. Somehow that whole group that has been in control at the state level was linked to these scandals in one way or another. Clearly a misuse of public funds to invest in the speculation of rare coins. Then to have the investor start stealing only compounded the problems.
So this morning we will have a new governor come the first of the year. With a Republican controlled General assembly there will need to be some debate to fix the issues facing us all. Mr. Strickland does have conservative blood running through his veins on some issues.
Congratulations to Mr. Strickland and good luck in your new job.
