The Times-Sun gets it!!
Since there was some thoughtful people back in 2002 that amended the City Charter to make it harder to pass legislation in the city by emergency we now can jack people around by passing one agreement after another until they simply wear the citizens out. Although the citizens have the right to run a referendum on most legislation passed by council that referendum can easily be nullified by passing different versions of an ordinance and once the citizens run out of time and money, council gets its way just like the days of old. It appears that the citizens were one step a head of Fix and the trustees. The Trustees waited until the signatures were verified on the referendum and then they sent back their reply to council. Only to find that the citizens of Pickerington were wise to the shenanigans of Fix who had learned a long time ago about getting around the citizens. Why would a sitting council who had a number of the Pickerington Citizens come forward to oppose this agreement and not one person showed up in favor of the agreement and they passed it anyway. I believe there was a compromise agreement offered by the council minority and they were rejected off hand by Fix. Now back to square one, the city has lost a full year by the incompetence of Fix. After reading the campaign brochure being put out by the Young Republicans and their parents this weekend it appears some in the group think that the agreement is still on the table. Many appear to feel that a majority still support giving away all of these rights to the township. Guys you need to read the paper a little more. Fix is flushing the agreement that he crafted. He is trying to make the case that this charter amendment is unnecessary (issue 9) because he has taken the agreement off the table. However he doesn?’t say directly why it is so important to defeat the amendment to the City Charter. The fact is that the Times-Sun gets it and I hope the citizens get it. What is very clear to all of us in the City. The township never wanted to really negotiate with the City. They want to box the city in and not allow it to grow and prosper. They want to hold the population down so that the city voters don?’t have control (by voting power) over the election of the Trustees. I think this five way or more MOU will backfire once a property becomes available for development. The township will be shocked with how much the infrastructure costs are and they will be unwilling to wait for their cut in the future income tax revenues. They will want it now. Afraid to raise the township property taxes (township?’s only real source of more revenues) these deals will fall to the side. In five years many will begin to see the failures of these trustees and maybe some real talk will be about a merger. I would advise those in the township that continued attempts to suppress the city government and to control those in the city will fail because I think the city voters have moved forward since becoming a City. If you all want the services and facilities that have been stated we will have to pay for them. Even if we can attract some large corporations they will require some up front investments by the community. If we are truly one community then we ALL must pay not just the city taxpayers.
