Pickerington schools should cut true non-essentials
I've just read that the Pickerington Local School District (PLSD) will be making cuts if the 5 mill replacement fails. Superintendent Mantia warns that these cuts will be made in academics and transportation operations.
Now common sense dictates, and I think you will agree, that in a financial crisis, you first cut some of the more non-essential, frivolous luxuries in order to maintain functions which are crucial to the primary operation. Apparently the PLSD is of the opinion that academics is the most non-essential aspect of its operation and should be subject to the first cuts. I've not heard any recommendations to curtail any of the extracurricular ''fluff.''
From an operational standpoint the board calls this strategy. This kind of persuasion, however, is otherwise known as intimidation and last minute scare tactics.
And about property values - there is no way in the whole wide world this levy will affect our property values. People do choose to live in Pickerington for reasons other than the schools. In fact, I know people who have refused to move to Pickerington because of the freewheeling standards of the school board. Further, it is not the primary responsibility of all Pickerington residents to continually bail out this school district.
So, please voters, do not let the PLSD dictate your own financial crisis.
