School Levy

I Hope

I hope Katelyn isn't to upset after spending all of that time working on the teachers contract.

Looking to the Future

I hope she doesn't view it as time wasted. Between now and the next contract renewal tremendous effort will have to be made to get information on the health care gravy train out to the public and convince the PLSD Board that it is well past time for the school employees to pay health insurance rates in line with the general population of Ptown. No more of the 'we take a lower pay for the benefits' crap. They are well paid for the work they do and the taxpayers do not need to be further subsidizing their benefits on top of everything else.

The Big Picture

You cannot look at one piece of the compensation package in isolation. The market rate will allow you to put a price tag on the health care piece but won?’t tell you whether it is reasonable or not. Any large organization will have workers that are underpaid for what they produce and others are overpaid. A union unfortunately dictates that they all be compensated in a similar manner.

All I can say is that given the training required, the challenges they face and the impact they have on our children, I am grateful that teachers are willing work for what they are paid. The teacher that I know best, without a doubt, earns every cent.

Gravy Train?

Healthcare gravy train? My spouse teaches in PLSD and we utilize my insurance. My average coverage in the everyday corporate world is a better deal than what the teachers have. And my coverage is going up $1200 annually in '08.

Before you assume and call the compansation package a gravy train do you actually know what they pay?
