Hilliard teachers set the tone

In today's Dispatch...

Remember, their interests are our kid's interests only when the taxpayers ante up for above market pay and benefits. 3% plus step up raises and they're not happy.

Members of the Hilliard Education Association overwhelmingly rejected the latest contract proposal from the district last week. Some teachers now are refusing to volunteer time outside the school day to add pressure on the district administration.

Although district officials made the decision to cancel the activities, district spokeswoman Michelle Fessler said the union forced their hand.

Hilliard Education Association President Rick Strater said the union has not asked members to cancel any activities that affect students. He said the decision to ''work to rule'' -- meaning union members would perform only the duties required by their contract -- lies with the individual teachers and staffs at each building.

However, in an e-mail that appeared to be signed by Strater and union spokeswoman Kathy Lindsey, the two said they wanted teachers to stop or reduce all volunteer activities immediately, including tutoring, events with the parent-teacher organizations, homework clubs and after-school detentions.

''We also STRONGLY encourage each of you to have a building meeting as soon as possible to communicate the best way for these things to happen and the best way to implement these actions in your buildings,'' the e-mail stated.

The e-mail appeared to be addressed to union representatives. It was sent late last night to The Dispatch by Fessler.

Strater could not be reached last night for comment.

The district administration offered a three-year contract, in which base salaries would have been raised 3 percent each year. Union members would have paid an increasing share of their health-care costs each year: 6 percent of monthly costs the first year, 8 percent the second and 10 percent the third.

Fessler said teachers throughout the district told administrators yesterday that they would work to the rule.
