Pickerington Area Taxpayers Alliance

God Bless America, Mayor Hughes

Posted in: PATA
''It's a shame, but this is America.'' This is a direct quote from the Pickerington Times-Sun, January 24, 2001. It can be found in the front-page article titled ''Donation boosts new police facility plan'' by Aaron D. Martin. The article continues on page 2, left hand side under the title ''Donation'', second paragraph. Are you with me?

The article started out to be an uplifting essay on the donation of $2,500 by Fairfield Federal Savings and Loan for the new Pickerington Police Station. The donation was presented by a terrific person and community supporter, whom I have the pleasure of knowing personally, Ms. Linda Johnson. What a fantastic supporter of Pickerington and Violet Township the bank has been. There's never been a worthy cause they have ignored. Can you imagine in the year 2001, there is still a place where your good name and a handshake still carries weight? From the bottom of my heart, thank you Fairfield Federal and thank you Linda. From this point, the article spiraled down into the fetid cesspool of Pickerington politics.

Mayor Hughes, HOW DARE YOU? How dare you publicly say that ''It's a shame, but this is America.''? Just who do you think you are? Where do you think you are? Are you going to stand behind the First Amendment while you publicly defame this great land of ours? Is that your plan? This is not Iraq. This is not Kosovo. This is not North Korea. This is not China. Thank your lucky stars for that. If it were one of those countries, who knows what would have been done to you for speaking those words. Only in a great nation like America can you publicly defile our nation and still hide behind the flag when called out for it. Take pride in your contempt for America. We'll remember it the next time we exercise ''our cherished rights'', as you say, when it is time to elect responsible leadership in our community. Take down the American flag in front of City Hall. Exercise another of ''our cherished rights'' and burn it. Go ahead, you spit on it and us in the newspaper. Burn it, and when you're done, throw your head back and laugh. Do a little jig on the ashes.

''You're free to be stupid, and you're free to be misinformed.'' You're darn tootin' we are. You are. You prove it every time you open you mouth and inanity (look that up) spews forth. That's another of ''our cherished rights'' guaranteed by the Constitution of the United Stated of America that you publicly degrade. My philosophy of leadership has always been Lead By Example. Thank you for subscribing to that philosophy. If we are as stupid as you say, it is a result of your leadership. If we are stupid and misinformed as you have told your students on numerous occasions, you should be proud. You have molded us in your image. Keep working on your students. Then they can be stupid and misinformed citizens responsible for the next generation of leadership in Pickerington. Keep raising the bar on stupidity and absurdity and help us clear it.

Mr. Hughes, I'll repeat my plea from before. Do us all a favor and, as a whole, resign from your offices. Resign and leave in disgrace. Skulk out of Pickerington and forget you ever knew us. We'll find a way to forget you. Take your cronies with you. You have been in power too long. You've grown stale and tiresome. Time for some new blood. Time for change. Time for truth.
