I would like to take this opportunity to respond to Mr. Rookstool?’s letter to the editor in This Week in Pickerington, March 20th, 2002. I am responding as a resident of the City of Pickerington and am in no way representing PATA, nor do I speak for them.
Sir,
I originally wrote this under my name and intended posting it that way. Then I remembered what happened the last time I did that. I too wrote a letter to the editor. Unfortunately it was never printed. I did though receive calls from a couple of elected officials in the city asking about it. I was very upset that they had access to my personal information even after the paper decided not to print it and the perception I then had that some of the papers discuss potential articles with City officials before printing them. I was also very upset by the tone the officials took with me for exercising my right to free speech. I won?’t elaborate further because I don?’t want them calling me again if they read this.
Sir, what I found out after this had happened is that it is a common occurrence for people to get these types of calls from elected officials or other people employed by the City if they speak out in meetings or in the press.
Once again, speaking just for myself, it is my opinion that there is at least one, maybe more, for lack of a better term ?“Whackos?” who post in this column. Besides opening myself to undesirable calls from City people, the last man I want calling me to bother me is one of the posters in this column.
You have said that posting anonymously undermines credibility. You are entitled to that opinion. However by looking at the number of hits these pages get every month I think you might be in the minority with your opinion.
Other than your opinions about PATA, I think you and I agree on most things. I too am saddened that in this day and age someone would stoop to sending her that package. I doubt that it was a PATA associate that sent it but someone trying to make it look like PATA. I guess that shows that PATA is having an impact across the community if someone takes it seriously enough to try to make it look bad.
As to the censored posting in this column, are you referring to the one that discussed someone?’s personal medical problems? Because if you are, that was just plain bad taste and should have been removed. If you are talking about something else, my apologies, I must have missed that. But with over 350 postings that month, I might have missed more.
As to setting up editorial spaces in this web site, have you contacted the City to see if they are willing to do so? Their site is very stale and uninformative. They are up to 6 months behind in posting meeting minutes and it?’s just plain boring to go to that site. Perhaps opinion and editorial forums will bring some interest to the site. Also, others that post here complain about anonymous posters. Perhaps you could join forces with them to set up another site that requires signing your name and some of us could take our postings there. It?’s not too expensive and there are people with similar viewpoints to yours with the expertise to accomplish it. Who knows: ?“Rookstool for Trustee in 2003?”? Has a ring to it.
Mr. Rookstool, you are a voice in this community. You have obvious passion for making things work out between all entities in our community. I applaud that and keep up the good work.
