I read an interesting article in the SCHOOL BELL. I guess the school board is now going around telling people that if the gullible voters pass this bond issue to build these two new elementary schools that the school kids would be out of the portables for 8 to 10 years. Is the word lair too strong of a word here?
Let?’s do the math folks. We currently have about 1500 kids in portable classrooms right now. Once we open the new High School which is designed (both High Schools) to hold 3600 high school kids. There are a little over 600 per class. If all classes are equal then that means the two high schools currently have 2400 kids. That leaves 1200 extra seats at the High School level. At 8% growth rate that means the High school will be fully loaded in four years.
The junior high has 1200 kids. I think with the new Junior High we will have 1800 junior high seats. At the 8% growth rate equals full in 5 years.
The elementary levels face similar situations. If we pass this new bond issue to build the two new elementary schools, we would be lucky to get by for 5 years with out portables. I think we will only have about 650 open seats once these two new elementarys are built.
I think it is time for some real honest answers from our school board. You are flat lying to the public about how many years we could not be over crowded but refuse to take on the Pickerington City Council and The Township Trustees in controlling residential growth in the school district.
I add the Township trustees because they have enjoyed the ranting of this web site going after the Pickerington City Council. However there are a number of issues they will need to address to control future residential growth and they (Trustees) have sit on their hands.
Please someone, anyone, tell me how this school board can promise 8 to 10 years with no portable classrooms at the same time telling this community that they can't control residential growth? If they can?’t control the residential growth then why are they promising in a newsletter something they have no idea of what the growth rate might be? It seems I heard them say the same thing two years ago to get the bond passed for the new High School. They claimed they would still have High School capacity by 2010. (August 2nd 2000 Marty England told the board that they would only have 3200 kids in our high schools in the year 2010). If the school board is lying to us all then how can we ever fix the problem with our elected people? Is the school board mis-lead? Are they really just nice people that want to take care of our children. If the latter is true when do they stand up against this city council and demand the rate of growth cut drasticly?
