Pickerington Income Tax

Posted in: PATA
I have a novice tax question or two and wasn't sure if anyone might be able to shed some light on the subject for me...
We recently moved to Pickerington and I received an estimated income tax form from the city gov't and I guess I am not familiar with this sort of thing. I know that the city I work in takes out taxes but I wasn't aware that where you reside also takes it out and wants an estimated taxes and money up-front. Is this true of every city? Are we going to pay estimated taxes each year? Just curious, thanks for any help with this.

You pay in advance.

Tom

Yes; they will send out a tax statement to you every year. If you work in another city that has income tax then the city where you work will take out their taxes from your payroll deductions. Most companies will not take out Pickerington income taxes if they are not located in Pickerington.

So by April 15th of every year you are required to file an estimated income tax return with Pickerington. They require you to pay them half of your estimated income tax on April 15th.

Then about the first of Decemeber you will receive the second half statement from the city demanding the second half of yor estimated taxes. If you under pay then they require the remainder by April 15th of the following year. If you over pay you can apply that to the current year's taxes.

They do give you a tax credit of .5% for any money earned in another city that was tax in that city. If you are retired you do pay any taxes on retirement income. So who are they selling all these condos too? If these folks are retired how come they don't pay are we trying to bleed everyone dry?

If you fail to pay they will charge you in Mayor's court and probably fine you.

I hope you are not planing on not paying these taxes. Man we must support the Violet Festival, They had to pay for a float in the parades and I think that is around $17,000. They pay for all of these bands that entertain at the Pickerington Festivals. They pay to have the city managers car detailed. I sure hope you make a lot of money. We really need your income. Besides the fax that the city has doubled its debt in just three years and is due to double it in the next three years. If we have a down turn in the economy then the tax payers of Pickerington must fund these outstanding bond issues. No matter how much tax you currently pay your property tax could sky rocket in the next few years.

Tom; Please forget about what I just said. It is a wonder place to raise children and live. the Mayor lives to refer to this place as coming right out of a Norman Rockwell Painting. You do believe that don't you? So why would you have any problems paying our taxes?

Re: Pickerington Income Tax

Hello Tom,

Yes, you are required to pay Pickerington city income taxes semiannually. They have a 0.5% reduction for those who work outside city limits. You will also get hit with the school?’s 1% income tax that many employers CAN deduct from your paycheck.

Anyone ?“in-the-know?” please correct me, but I do believe the city can raise the 0.5% reduction anytime they have a fiscal need, much like Lancaster city council voted to do. In essence, the city raises taxes without citizen input or a citywide vote (very favorable to local politicians fearing voter backlash).

I suspect Pickerington to do the same or?… stave off major tax increases and/or reductions in city services until the Nov. 2003 elections. I do believe they have the financial savvy and resources to do that. After which, the current city councilman and city employees (i.e., city manager and city attorney) can, from the words of Mr./Ms. Hemmingway in an earlier posting, ?“laugh all the way to the bank riding their Harleys and move away to the next area targeted by Berry.?”

Either way, what you?’re paying today will more than likely not is the same as what you?’ll be paying tomorrow. Someone has to pay for the 5,000 new homes already on the books and the necessary infrastructure that goes with them.
Thanks :-(

John,

Thanks for the sobering reply - oh well, I guess this is part of life's education. It certainly can help in decisions down the road (i.e. staying in a place where they give breaks to the builders and screw the homeowners/tax-payers).
