On October 29th I posted a message about the Pickerington girls Basketball coach. It was in response to an allegation that was published in the Columbus Dispatch. Apparently it has happened again. Just a few days after that article another (now) young woman came forward to tell the Pickerington Local Schools Superintendent that she also was sexual harassed while she played Basketball for Pickerington. Yet all we hear is that he has a year left on his contract.
Note that when this was all hitting the fan this young woman came forward on November 4th, 2002. It has taken over a month to get out to the public. Now it seems to me that it would take a lot of courage for a young person to come forward to tell their story. We see it in the happening in the Catholic Church today. Trying to cover these things up only adds to the pain and suffering of those young people that have lived through this torment by an authority figure. The resentment will build and it will bring down the entire school system if the adults in charge are not willing to step forward and do the right thing.
Obviously the coach has rights as a teacher. He has rights of being in a tenured status. However when has any coach had rights of not being fired as a COACH? He certainly must be given an opportunity to defend himself and seek legal counsel if these charges against him have legal ramifications.
However his sole purpose in his profession is to teach these young people History not how to fend off a groper. Isn?’t there another famous History teacher here at Pickerington?
As a parent and citizen of Pickerington I have lost all faith in our elected leaders. To place the basketball program above the welfare of our children is beyond me. How do the board members justify their collective inaction? Are they waiting for one of these girls to commit suicide or bring a gun to school to even the score? Oh by the way the opposite page on the Metro Section of The Dispatch a student did bring a gun to the Pickerington High School last week. It might be loaded the next time?
