Questions from 03/04 council mtg

Posted in: PATA
Last night I heard a few things I?’d like to learn more about. It would be great if someone from the BIA or Columbus Board of Realtors would field these questions for me.

At the 03/05/2003 council meeting I heard how slowing the growth in the city would cause irreparable harm and we would never recover from taking such a drastic measure. I believe in 1995 the city of Pickerington imposed a, quick hold your breath, moratorium on new house builds. Did this irreparably harm the community? Did Pickerington still remain a desirable place to live? Do people still want to move here? Were people still able to sell their land? Obviously since history and the facts don?’t support this claim I?’m curious as to where I erred since the BIA obviously has more FACTS to support this claim than I do.

Another interesting topic I?’d like greater detail on is regarding these 1000 construction workers who work in our city each year. According to Mr. Hart ?“those workers supply the area with income tax?”. Now let me get this straight. If a construction company is located in Canal Winchester, Dublin, Bexley, or wherever and the workers come to construct a house in Pickerington they pay Pickerington income tax? If that is the case then it must be an administrative nightmare for the payroll dept at the construction companies. Ok Joe you framed a house in Pickerington for 20 hours this week, 20 in Canal plus those extra 10 hours you worked in Bexley on that remodel. So we owe Pickerington and Canal each 20 hours of income tax and another 10 to Bexley. Sorry but I don?’t buy it. I?’m not a tax accountant or lawyer but don?’t your employees pay income tax to the city in which your company resides? Maybe I?’m missing something here but I think this is another fallacy!

My personal opinion is that Mr. Hart is really trying to say that those 1000 workers supply the homes, which allows more people to move into the area, which in turn provides the income tax to the city.

Does a community that shows it cares so much about its kids that it is willing to take on city hall, the BIA, and the Columbus Board of Realtors really sound like a place you wouldn?’t want to live in? Do residents who think that education should come first sound like bad neighbors? Do people who think building an infrastructure and planning growth should take precedence to the profiting of the developers sound like bad people?

This growth plan does NOT CLOSE THE DOOR BEHIND US! If Pickerington builds 100 homes in a year and the township continues on its course of 200 or so per year that is 300 new homes in the Pickerington School district in 1 year! I don?’t see how 600 to 900 new people moving into the area in one year in any way suggests we are closing the doors behind us!

I welcome your responses.
