save activities - volunteer

Posted in: PATA
the monies that are being saved by not having extra-curriculars are directly related to ''salaries''.

if the coaches truly care as quoted in today's paper, why don't they coach for free or for whatever the booster clubs can raise?

mr. liptrap says he needs to look for another ''job''. isn't he a teacher first, coach parttime? am i missing something?

Other options, too

In addition, can't other people volunteer? I have younger children, so I don't know the requirements, etc. for coaching or helping with sports, or helping run extracurricular clubs. However, is there anything that would prevent parents of the kids wanting to participate from assisting and volunteering? For example, if my kids wanted to do yearbook, or student council, or chess club, etc. - I would offer to step forward and help. Much like many parents do at other grade levels. Of course, it might be more difficult finding volunteers for more ''skilled'' positions.

Likewise, to cut costs, maybe the school could revert to carpooling to events rather than paying for bussing. I'm sure a liability release could be drafted which would protect the school.

Additionally, maybe those of us who do not have to pay increased taxes due to the levy failure and will not have to ''pay to play'' this year (as we don't have kids that age who are directly impacted), can make contributions to make sure all kids have the opportunity to participate. If this effort is undertaken, I'll contribute.
