In 1999 the City of Pickerington hired an Economic Development Director and her name is Susan Crotty. Mayor Lou Postage stated as a councilman that they would fire her if she didn?’t produce. Yet four years later we are no closer to having any kind of economic development than we were FOUR years ago.
I know the knee jerk reaction is to blame this lack of commercial development on Ms. Crotty. However she must have some tools to work with. What has been the policy of the City Manager? Has she done anything to encourage commercial development? Do we have any lands, that are set aside, that is currently available to market to companies that might be considering moving to the Pickerington area?
Clearly the majority of the current Pickerington City Council had allowed Ms. Bushman to make decisions without their over sight. Have they insisted on any kind of development? Clearly we hear about ?“Quality Businesses?”, and that is what we want to attract. Yet where are these businesses?
I read in the Dispatch and the local papers that Mount Carmel will more than likely relocate their expansion branch hospital in the Diley Road area or should I say the CANAL WINCHESTER SCHOOL DISTRICT.
When are we going to wake up? When are we going to find elected leaders that understand the value of bringing businesses like a hospital here? When are we going to have a city council that is more concerned about the tax base and how it affects the school district? WHEN WHEN WHEN?
What do we want this area to look like if a few years? If we rule out a hospital then we rule out everything that is commercial. Where is the Pickerington Area Chamber of Commerce? Why are they sitting on their duffs? Don?’t they have a development department? Do they only want to attract coffee shops and pizza parlors into the city? Is this the only QUALITY businesses they support?
You know we heard from these builders and how much money they spend here in town at lunch time. Hospitals have people visiting from out of town. They stay at the hotels, eat at the restaurants, and but gas. The very same things the BIA says there members do. Yet what kind of income tax would we be collecting from the Doctors, Nurses, and other technicians working at a new hospital? Most construction workers don?’t even file returns.
It is time we take the bull by the horns and throw the bums out. For those of you that have children in school don?’t sit on your collective butts thinking this will change without you. You must be involved in this fall?’s election. This will be your chance. Those that are empty nesters, retired and single couples your actions must be to throw the bums out along with their clones. Please call those that announce they are running and volunteer to help with either money or time. Our future depends up on it.
