I'm very proud of the work and attention residents put into our community. We're lucky to live in a place that doesn't know the word ''apathy''!
PICKERINGTON
Petitions challenge city?’s Hickory Lakes purchase
Petitions have been filed challenging two Pickerington ordinances authorizing the purchase of Hickory Lakes, the Ault Road property owned by Gary and Sharon Buccilla.
Petition organizers, who gathered more than 355 signatures to place the ordinances on the Nov. 2, 2004, ballot, say the city has not answered questions about the its intentions for the land.
The City Council authorized paying $3.3 million for the 95-acre property.
City officials say the purchase makes sense because, under a wetlands reserve program sponsored by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, the purchase is essentially free for the city.
The city may divert $3 million in interest payments that it would pay to the state on an $11 million loan for the construction of a planned sewage treatment plant to buy Hickory Lakes, as long as the city promises not to develop the property.
