Beware - One-Issue Candidates
While I respect reccer's opinion regarding growth, I would like to caution voters to make sure they elect well-rounded, qualified officials to the school board to educate our community's children.
While it is common within politics for interest groups to support a candidate solely based on one issue (such as abortion), it is danagerous for our democracy. To disregard all other facts about the candidate or his or her background is unwise.
Stemming growth is a major issue. But if we closed the gates today and stopped all new houses within Pickerington, our school board would still have to deal with over 3,000 new students from new homes already permitted and face the challenge of educating 8,500 kids within the district in a cost-effective manner in an era of declining income.
My message to reccer ... I think it will hurt anti-growth candidates substantially if they are labeled as a single issue candidate for the school board. Your comments may have hurt Reade and other candidates running on the anti-growth platform by reinforcing that they are one issue candidates. The vast majority of the readers here don't favor one-issue candidates even if a large number of unknown postings center on the issue.
