Backroom Deals/ Private Meetings

Posted in: PATA
Apparently, both Lisa Reade and now Bruce Rigelman jointly decided that the public school board business should be conducted by a shadow government of a few hand-picked, select-community-members-driven citizens.

Here is what the actual Pickerington Times Sun said about Reade/Rigelman's shadow government.

Part I

The public's business should be conducted in public (are you listening, Rigelman?).

It is a simple premise and one that has served U.S., Ohio and local government well (except PLSD board the first quarter of 2003). But is often the first thing disgarded when groups -- such as Pcikerington area new CommUNITY 1st Task Force -- attempt to do what they believe is the right thing for the entire community.

That's why laws (as attorney Rigelman should know) such as what have been termed the Sunshine Laws in Ohio exist. They are meant to ensure elected officials do the people's business in the light of day, where all can see and hear what is being considered for the greater good.

Back-room deals and private meetings conducted by elected officials (are you listening yet Rigelman) serve no useful purpose.

Neither do such private meetings conducted by well-meaning residents who seek to influence public business (hear that Reade?).

Allegations of such actions are often the first thing we hear from callengers at election time (and Reade it is election time) or when community groups are perturbed by a public entity's actions.

Such is the case in Pickerington Local School District, where some residents have been vocal what they been have been bad decisions by City Council (and yes believe it or not there is more) the Violet Township Board of Trustees and the board of education (yes, Rigelman bad decisions by the board).

And this sounds vaguely familiar to something else I read about a former school official who is now in the next county over.
