I hear that the presentation of the donation from the condo developer turned into a bit of a ''praise mayor Postage'' session. He was apparently 'instrumental' in securing the donation. Interesting it's presented that way.
Somewhere I read that the site where these condos will be built was originally approved as a golf course, senior center, offices, and a few condos. Now we have hundreds of apartments and condos...no doubt recorded as ''commercial'' development for purposes of city records. I believe that the folks involved in that included some current city administration, council, and some former city officials who have since relocated to federal custody.
Mosr recently I read that the condo company projected that their 250 unit development will yield only 40 kids. I'm sure that's true of their developements in some communities, but it's not going to be true in Pickerington. This community is known for it's schools.
I'm not being critical of the company, the are in business to make money. They have actually been more generous than most in giving a donation...they don't owe us any ''preservation of our schools''...they bought the land, and they followed the zoning rules that our officials set up, and they are in business to make money. The donation was an unusual gesture, our school are our problem, which we would normally address through the actions of our elected officials.
That's where things break down here. Their is no balance to the developers profit motive in this town. There's nobody to step up and say that their estimate is silly, nobody to say that we already have too many homes in the pipeline, nobody to question the debt of the sewer plant they need to keep building...
They seem distracted by the need to attend school board meetings and accept the acolades of those developers, who must be surprised and thrilled at the amount of support they receive in this community.
