I watched today as a free people expressed their views and positions on both sides, pro and con. I saw democracy in action. I saw both sides openly able to express their views, in action and in print. I saw the rights we hold so dear be defended by several. We are a strong nation because of our diversity of thought and expression. We are a strong nation because our leadership can be questioned and challenged. We expect that if change is needed that it will be the will of the people who stand up and make it so. I see the men and women fighting for the very rights that you question today. I see them bleeding and falling so that you and your community can openlly debate this issue. Do you really want to be a nation that does not allow for open expression of differing views? Do you want to be a nation that silences a political view just because it disagrees with our own? Do you really want to be in a nation where one person's commitment to a vote is so transitory that the mere gossip surrounding an election prompts them to change their vote? Do we want to be a community, in fact a nation that does not demand loudly that we expect life liberty and the pursuit of happiness?
