The city planned for failure
In the 1950 President Eisenhower proposed the U.S. Interstate system. That interstate system is still being developed. Its purpose was for National Defense and to move supplies and troops from one location to another. However as we are seeing on TV they built many of the interstate roads in this area below sea level and the Lake Pontachtrain water levels. Thus they flood when this kind of disaster happens. I even know better than that.
Then there is the elaborate pumping system within the city to keep it dry because 80% of the city is below sea level. They have a huge levy between the city and the Mississippi River. It held. However they only have a concrete wall levy about 8 inches wide that protects them from the Lake Pontachtrain. Now this wall has failed and it filled the city with lake water. First they can not pump the water out, even after the levy is fixed. The reason is they put the pumps underground and below water levels. The pumps are now contaminated with sewer water. Now I know better than that. They are also driven by electric motors. and they have no electricity. I know better than that also.
Yesterday two thirds of the New Orleans police department resigned. Was it because of a lack of leadership again?
Clearly there is a crime problem when all these criminals were doing was waiting on the home owners to leave because of the hurricane and then they moved in on their houses stealing everything in their sight. With a demoralized police department they were so brave that they were pinning the police down with sniper fire. It took the Mayor a couple of days to issue a shoot to kill order.
Then there is the 100s of school buses sitting unused in the school lot and no one was taking advantage of the this mode of transportation? I could have even driven one of those buses myself. Mayor you had the power to commandeer those school buses. I think before you return to office you should read your state constitution.
Then Mayor what happen to the rest of your city employees? I saw on the news today that the reporter hitched a ride with one of you dump truck drivers to go check on this city employees' bosses home. On their return trip the reporter had to beg this city employee to save nearly a dozen stranded people in your city.
Cleary New Orleans went into this hurricane with no leadership at City Hall or the Governor's office. The first responders are the local governments. You directed people to the Superdome and provided nothing for them to drink or to eat and no security. That was not the federal governments duty at that point.
Should the US government now try to negotiate with France and give the city back for a good price? Or should they move Washington D.C there where they also run that local government?
