Successful Knowledge Is Power Events
Knowledge is Power Block Party- The Block Party is a day to promote Non-violence through music, dance, art, and speech. Many Children activities, basketball tournament, live music, live performers, motivational speakers, and a cookout all in one day. This was a community outreach event. Over 500 people attended, and local organizations were able to promote their services to our residents.
Candle Vigil in Honor of Marcos Cruz- This candle vigil was to inform the community that the family of Marcos Cruz is still hoping to find the person responsible for his death. They lit candles in remembrance and to bring awareness to the community of this unsolved murder and to advocate non-violence.
Candle Vigil in Honor of Helder Tomar- Helder Tomar was shot and killed April 26, 2008. The candle vigil was a cry from the community to end all violence and to fix the misunderstanding in the media and address and notify the community that he was NOT KILLED BY HIS OWN GUN.
Knowledge is Power Night on Teen Dating Violence- We had some performers and speakers to address the issue of domestic violence within our young adults. K.I.P. had local DV organizations educating the youth on domestic violence and the services that are available to help anyone in need.
Fundraising for Helder Tomar Fund/ 1 year Candle Vigil/ Non-violence Awareness KIP held a candle vigil for Helder Tomar for about 100 of Helder's family and friends, including his parents. KIP took this golden opportunity to deliver the message of non-violence to the youth and allowed the youth to sing and speak about our loved one. The Helder memorial bracelet and pin fund raising effort raised over $500 for the Helder Tomar Fund. All money raised will go towards a memorial bench in his honor. |
