Homeless Shelter Update

Posted in: Sunnyslope Village Alliance
We are now calling it a Family Transitional Living Center.

The sight in our area is on 19th Ave between Cochise & Beryl and backs up to an alley separating single family homes.

The citizen's committee will be having a meeting on
Tuesday May 11th at 6 PM
at The Sunnyslope Community Center
at 802 E. Vogel.

The focus should be (should be?) on homless families with children. (Note: in March 2001, Phoenix voter approved $7 million in bond funds to establish a facility to serve homless individuals and/or families.)I am glad focus has changed from what the voters approved. Wish those that voted would have considered something other than it would be north of Camelback for location.

Ours is just one of the final 3 locations under consideration. The committe wants to get this before the City Council before they take their Break.

According to the post card sent to those in the immediate vicinity and selected others they want our input.
There will be no formal presentation and staff will be available to answer questions. (A meeting setting would provide the community with a presentation and a question answer period where we could all benift from the same information)

This committe is now down to 3 sites to choose from. Yada Yada Yada as to why these 3 were chosen. Land for sale with proper zoning and acreage and price. On 7 of the final 10 sites, (now down to 3) the closeness to Sunnyslope Family Services was listed as either a pro or con.

Emergency beds will be avaiable. (What is this?) I have been told that these would be by referal only. Not sure where the referal would come from. (our cops, other overflowed service agencys???) Where would these emergencys go after the immediate emergency. What would be an emergency. It is hot and it is cold.

This will serve approximately 200 people with parking for 80 vehicles.

I just hope that all of you will attend.
