The Pleasantville Environmental Coalition formed in 2005 primarily in response to neighborhood’s concerns about the health and welfare of residents and their children in the aftermath of the catastrophic HDI (Houston Distribution, Inf.) fires, which burned uncontrollably for seven days in the summer of 1995. These fires released numerous toxic pollutants into the Pleasantville community.
The Pleasantville community is land-locked by chemical plants and warehouses, which manufacture and store hazardous chemicals until they are shipped to all points of the world. The community is surrounded by three major intermodal shipping industries including land, rail and the sea.
Toxic pollutans being breathed and ingested by the residents of the Pleasantville community may be related to high incidents of respiratory ailments and other health conditions. The long-term goal of the Pleasantville Environmental Coalition centers around the early detection, intervention, and remediation of air and water pollution in the community in order to protect the health and welfare of residents and their children.
The ultimate vision is to improve and maintain the quality of life for the all residents of the Pleasantville community. Our hope is to ensure that every single child, adolescent, adult, and senior citizen growing up and living in the Pleasantville community has the maximum opportunity to develop to his or her full potential and capacity.
Our objective is to better understand the cause and effect relationship between toxic pollutants and the health concerns of neighborhood residents. The Coalition wants to educate itself and area residents about environmental health risks present in the community, learn to work effectively and pro-actively with the businesses and industry surrounding our community, and access government resources to help remediate pollution sources within the community. This study will help us to better understand what is happening in our neighborhood by documenting problems that exist, so that we can begin to identify solutions to those problems.
