Everyone is pretty sad to see Kienow's closing. We need that grocery store.

And what will happen there? Will there be a new building? What are your thoughts.

I agree, it is sad to see Kienow's go. I feel awful about the way the employees have been treated, they have all really been a part of our neighborhood.

My understanding is that it is still unclear what will happen to the property. However, I think the Neighborhood Association will be notified, through the planning bureau, of any proposed construction/development. I may be wrong about that. (Any of you planners out there listening?)

Kienow's Closing

Admittedly I've not been active in the neighborhood organization, and it's possible this issue has been addressed in earlier GPNA flyers, so I'm not in position to point fingers of blame for inaction; but, are we going to let Kienow's go down and their beloved employees be downsized into an uncertain future without putting up a major fuss? Does anyone know what is going in there? Can we as a neighborhood insist on having something to say about what goes onto that lot? This morning a drilling rig is over there. What are they drilling for and why? Does anyone know?
I kept asking at the store during this past week if anyone knew if any kind of neighborhood action was being planned, and they just shrugged their shoulders and shook their heads. Since I haven't been active in the GPNA, I didn't know what numbers to call for information, so I was glad to receive the monthly flyer this morning.
Is it too late to get a movement going? What do you all know about the real estate company's plans for that lot?
I just hate to see our good neighbor die without us all getting out there to pay our proper repects AND I hate to see some bully moving in without our putting up major resistance and asking the important questions. Are you with me?

Kienow's Closing

I didn't know anything about the Kienow's closing until I heard about it in the newspaper. You didn't miss anything in the newsletter; it caught us all by surprise.

I have no idea what is planned. I heard about a drilling operation over there earlier this week. It is possible they are doing soils test to determine structural foundations for a new building or there may be an underground oil tank and they are testing for contamination.

I spoke with Barry Manning from the Planning Bureau and he did not know of any recent interest regarding this site. Usually the Planning Bureau meets early in the process if construction is planned.

Neighborhood input in any future use or new construction will depend on what is planned. If the new building or use falls within the parameters of the current zoning, we will not have an opportunity to comment.

I'd love to see the neighborhood make a fuss; if there is enough interest expressed on the web page, maybe some form of protest can be organized. Remember though, Kienow's chose to sell. It is not some outside influence that is forcing Kienow's to close.
