Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is warning North Carolinians about a dangerous phone scam targeting families of jailed inmates. Scammers pose as licensed bail bondsmen or sheriff’s deputies and pressure victims to send money through apps like Chime, Apple Pay, or Venmo, promising early release.

If you receive one of these calls, hang up and verify the information with the NCDOI Criminal Investigations Division. Special Agents are currently investigating 24 cases across the state.
