Pawtucket Seeking Candidates to Serve on Newly Formed Advisory Commission on Arts and Culture

Pawtucket:  Mayor Donald R. Grebien announced the Pawtucket City Council’s approval of his Administration’s proposal to establish an Advisory Commission on Arts and Culture.  The mission of this newly created Commission is to showcase the different types of arts and diverse cultures found in Pawtucket, as well as arts-related education and business-oriented displays in City Hall and in other publicly owned properties.

The five member board (who live, work, and/or own a business in Pawtucket) serving staggered terms, appointed by Mayor Grebien and approved by the Pawtucket City Council City of Pawtucket, will advise the Mayor on arts and cultural Affairs issues.  The application’s deadline is Friday, May 24.

According to the Mayor resume and a letter of interest to serve on the Commission  might come from a variety of backgrounds: artists; arts groups representing theater, music, visual, dance, photography, and film; ethnic and cultural groups; landscape architects; arts-oriented and creative sector businesses; educators; cultural groups; and residents or businesses or mill developers interested in showcasing the City’s arts. .

“By creating the Advisory Commission, I am pleased that the Pawtucket City Council shows its commitment to bringing more public input into the creation of permanent and temporary public art projects that would transform public spaces, and celebrate our City’s cultural diversity,” said Mayor Grebien.

          “Over the last 14 years the City of Pawtucket has recognized and encouraged the growth of a vibrant arts community in the City.  We have found that artists, being small businesses, along with creative companies, have helped us grow our economy and fill  empty and underutilized mills,” said the Mayor.  The Advisory Commission on Arts and Culture will provide feedback to my Administration as to how to effectively continue to showcase arts, culture and business activities in our City, he said.
