Rego Park Geography

Rego Park is an neighborhood in central Queens, New York. It is bordered to the north by Elmhurst and Corona, the east and south by Forest Hills and the west by Middle Village.

Farmland until the early 20th century, the area that came to be called Rego Park was once populated by Chinese farmers who sold their produce to merchants in New York's Chinatown. The name "Rego Park" came from the Real Good Construction Company, which began development of the area in 1925.

Along Queens Boulevard, Rego Park is home to some of Queens' most popular shopping destinations, including the Rego Park Center, a retail complex with large Sears, Bed Bath & Beyond and Circuit City locations. The Queens Center mall, the borough's largest, lies just across the border with Elmhurst.

Rego Park's boundaries include Queens Boulevard, the Long Island Expressway, Woodhaven Boulevard, and Yellowstone Boulevard.

Population

Like its neighbor, Forest Hills, Rego Park has long had a significant Jewish population, with a number of synagogues and kosher restaurants. Cartoonist Art Spiegelman grew up in Rego Park and made it the setting for significant scenes involving his aged father in Maus, his graphic novel about the Holocaust. Even as many Jews have departed for further-flung suburbs over the years, they have been replaced by Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Today the neighborhood has a strong Russian character, with many signs visible in Cyrillic script. Immigrant populations from Israel, Romania, Iran, India, Colombia and South Korea are also well-represented.

Though some areas populated largely by immigrants fall victim to high crime rates and low property values, Rego Park, long a diverse immigrant community, has remained one of the safer and more-desirable neighborhoods in Queens. Real-estate prices are some of the highest in the borough, in part because of easy access to Manhattan via several subway lines.

Schools

P.S. 139 (Rego Park School, grades K-6), P.S. 174 (William Sidney Mount School, grades K-6), which are operated by the New York City Department of Education, are in Rego Park. Residential areas in Rego Park are zoned to either P.S. 139, P.S. 174, or P.S. 206 (the Lynn Gross Discovery School, K-6). All areas in Rego Park are zoned to J.H.S. 190 (Russell Sage). J.H.S. 190 (grades 7 - 9) is located in Forest Hills. Rego Park is not zoned to a high school as all New York City high schools get students by application.

There are different cultures in this area, but at least we know that the multicultural people on this site speak english :)

Let's all get together here to get to know each other, and discuss all the things we like and dislike about Rego Park and the people and places in it!

Let's bring back the community feeling and help each other! :)

Now is a great time to get involved!

For more information on the group, please see the other links on this website.

Group Organizer

The Rego Park Group was officially started by Ava in 2000, a long time (most of her life) Rego Park Resident.

Ava is the single mother of a daughter age 15.

Ava started talking to friends and neighbors about how the neighborhood has changed so much for the worse, and has lost the community feeling it once had. Most of her friends had left to better places, and everyone she talked to either didn't want to get involved in improving the situations or do not speak enough english. They asked her to do something about it! Ava started to go to more community and city meetings. She saw there was not much support for the Rego Park area, Zip code 11374.

Rego Park is included in most jurisdictions that service Forest Hills zip code 11375, but there isn't much going on within Rego Park itself, and for our residents only. Residents are not satisfied with the local government and services.
Ava decided to help, and start the Rego Park Group, a community group where neighbors and people working in the area could get together to meet and talk about the community.

Ava is also a member of the Rego Park-Forest Hills Lions Club, Liaison for the Queens Coalition for Parks and Green Spaces, and joined the Rego Park Group as an affiliate or CAGE - Citizens Against Graffiti Everywhere.
We are also A "Park Group" dedicated to the Green Spaces in The Rego Park area and are very involved with the Dept of Parks and Partnerships for parks, organizing many events in the parks during the warm months.

Local Friendships

A common complaint from the residents of Rego Park is that there are too many cultures in this area, and it is difficult to find someone who speaks english well enough for friendship, and most of the people "stick to their own". Some people find it difficult to cultivate local friendships. The Rego Park Group believes that we can all get to know each other, and the neighborhood will be a much more pleasant place.
If we meet on a corner where we live to get some air with each other, have a party, or do a community cleanup project, it will benefit all of us. Don't be afraid to say Hello while walking down the sidewalk! Make Rego Park friendly ! Now is a great time to get involved!
