Maggie and her dog Luke, spend time each week making their community a better place. Since moving to their neighborhood, she started collecting trash and glass on walks along the greenway. In her own words, “I’ve always been interested in keeping public greenway areas clean and accessible for our community.”
This has turned into a group effort between Maggie and Luke where they dedicate time on each walk to cleaning up the area so other people and animals can enjoy. Maggie is part of both the Adopt a Stream and Tree Maintenance programs. Maggie shared, “Our area has plentiful wildlife and I believe a huge part of that providing and maintaining a clean green space!” We are so grateful for the heart and time Maggie and Luke invest in their community!

Don’t leave the leaves, Adopt-A-Drain! |

With leaves beginning to fall, it’s a great time to participate in our Adopt-A-Drain Program! If you live or work near a drain in the Towns of Matthews, Mint Hill, Pineville, Davidson, Cornelius, and Huntersville you can participate! By participating in this program, you will check your adopted drain once a month and make sure it is clear of any debris or trash. You can monitor the storm drain for any pollutants, damage, or odors and report these issues to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services (CMSWS) by calling 311. Additionally, reminders will be sent out by CMSWS before forecasted heavy rains so that volunteers can ensure the storm drain(s) are free of debris so rain can quickly enter the drain. Check out our page at for more details and to sign up for the Adopt-A-Drain Program!

While we’re playing, walking our pets, and enjoying this great weather, remember that bacteria and other components of pet waste can throw off the natural balance of our streams and harm aquatic life. Be sure to always pick up after your pets whether it’s in our parks, on the streets, or in your back yard. Scoop the poop! Bag it and trash it!

The Creek ReLeaf Program is a collaborative effort of the Charlotte Public Tree Fund, Charlotte Mecklenburg Storm Water Services, the North Carolina Wildlife Federation, and dedicated volunteers and financial supporters to plant trees in riparian areas (floodplain and stream buffers) of Mecklenburg County. This year Creek ReLeaf will occur on November 23rd from 9am to 12pm and volunteers will be planting native trees along the recently restored Stewart Creek at Seversville Park.
