Recycling
???
At our Sept 14, 2011 Association Meeting, an attendee asked about the recycling program going on in the McNeil Estates and how it could be started in the Westleigh Neighborhood.
It was stated that Bob Coyle of Republic Services had been a guest speaker at our Westleigh Neighborhood Association meeting on February 24, 2009. He came and spoke to us about the pilot recycling program and took the time to assess our neighborhood and reported back in March 2009 that the side-loading trucks wouldn't work down the alleys as the neighbors wanted to keep their trash pickup in the alleys.
I was asked to follow-up with his original assessment as over two years have passed.
Bob Coyle's Reply -
We implemented the pilot recycling program in the McNeil Neighborhood Association in June 2011. It has been very successful with recycling increasing to 25%. Every home received a large wheeled cart for trash and one for recycling. It was the same program that I described at your neighborhood meeting. The trucks are side loading trucks and will not be able to pick up in the alleys because of the overhead utility wires. Carts would have to be placed in the street in front of the homes. Your neighbor may have seen the bulky item truck in McNeil. Every other week one of our rear end load trucks goes into the McNeil area and collects anything that is too large to fit in the carts. All of the carts are emptied by side loading trucks.

I was asked to check further into the current recycling at the front curb and trash pickup in the back alley.
This will continue for know. However per Bob Coyle, it will continue as is until the City Council decides whether or not they want to move forward with the new program. If they decide to move forward we will need to have the recycling and the trash carts in the street in front of the homes.
I was also asked to check about surveying the neighborhood regarding the recycling program since not all the neighbors attend our meetings. I asked Bob Coyle if this was something Republic Service would do. He replied:
the City has contracted with the UNLV Cannon Survey Center to perform the survey of customers that are currently participating on the pilot program (~85,000). It will probably begin in October and the results will be delivered to the City in early November. After this process, there might be a chance for them to survey our neighborhood.
I'll stay in a touch with Bob and see if this will occur as this will be the best assessment to see what the neighborhood is deciding to do.
